Preserving Place Cooking Classes

by | Mar 20, 2016 | Activities

One of my favorite parts about Atlanta’s farmers markets is tasting all of the delicious produce and local goods, and from the moment I tasted Preserving Place‘s jams I was hooked.

Each flavor is unique and delicious in its own way, but I think Mama’s Strawberry Jam is my favorite! And while the jams are amazing, I recently found out Preserving Place offers cooking classes! I’m on a personal mission to find the best cooking classes in Atlanta, so you know I had to sign up to check it out myself… Could the classes be better than the jams?!

Preserving Places holds cooking classes out of its brick and mortar location in Westside. Last week I attended the “South in my Belly” Breakfast Class, which was taught by Preserving Place’s own Sarah Dodge, and I can’t stop thinking about it! Think southern breakfast classics like creamy pimento cheese grits, flaky buttermilk biscuits, crispy bacon and more!

The class started out with coffee, mimosas and a charcuterie board- like any good cooking class should!! We all snacked and mingled for a few minutes, and then Sarah began to go over the menu. Once we were clear on what we were about to prepare, we split up into small groups to tackle the individual dishes. I made a beeline for the buttermilk biscuits.

And let me tell you… baking biscuits is an art! But thanks to the help of our awesome instructor Sarah, I have to say I made a pretty mean biscuit! (But I guess the real test will be when I try to replicate the recipe back home.) Once the biscuits were baking in the oven, I couldn’t help but flutter around from station from station, looking at what everyone else was hard at work on.

The class was very hands on, but easy to manage. I didn’t feel overwhelmed or confused at all, even though I had never even attempted to bake a biscuit before. And it didn’t hurt that I was sipping on mimosas for most of the class…

But alas! We all finished cooking and it was time to take our seats. Because let’s be real: As fun as the cooking part of the class was, the eating part is always the best! And man was it good! Everything tasted delicious. And it was even better knowing we all had put a ton of hard work and love into each dish. It is safe to say that I left Preserving Place stuffed.

Preserving Place offers a ton of different classes taught by different local chefs! I encourage you to check out the schedule to see if any of them look interesting to you. And if I made the “South in my Belly” class sound too good to pass up, there is another class scheduled for April 23!
